매년, 미국 대학들은 신입생 또는 재학생들을 대상으로 여름 독서 프로그램으로 한 권 이상의 책을 읽도록 권합니다.  또한 대부분의 대학에서, 신입생들은 여름 동안 책을 읽은 후 학기 중에 그것을 분석하고 토론하게 됩니다.

2018년, 미국대학에서 선정한 책들의 주제는 이민자의 새로운 삶과 고난,미국의 인종, 미래과학 등 다양합니다.
